Wild Turkey run all the way down into Mexico and Ocellated Turkey are native to Yucatan, Belize, and Guatemala. Mesoamericans domesticated the birds some 2,000 or so years ago, iirc. So by the Pirate days, there were likely plenty of birds about to be roasted, and I think they were one of the food items used aboard ship for fresh meat supply.
