According to some industry sources, this is entirely deliberate. Netflix signs for three seasons, knowing they're most likely going to make one. They sign talent to a three season contract that is heavily end loaded, make one season and then pull the plug because apparently whatever cancellation clause they have on those contracts is STILL cheaper than setting up a single season contract. Why anyone takes these deals anymore was not explained, but I suppose it's just human nature to assume that YOUR show is going to be so successful it will be one of the few exceptions and you'll actually make that promised pile of dough for season three.
