In response to the whole concept of this being a "correction": I mean like...maybe they just swapped positions twice? Garfield describing it as "synchronized" calls to mind the idea of synchronized swimming or dancing, which both would involve the participants moving around enough to do things like swap positions multiple times. Garfield and Jon are both standing up in the first two panels, and could very well be moving around between panels. So...is there really any reason to think it's even a mistake in the first place, other than a "muh modern garfield bad" bias? I acknowledge that the second panel's appearance could be a result of laziness, but that doesn't make the results not intentional.
Now, if you want something that actually seems at least a bit strange about this strip...as I mentioned earlier, they're both standing up by all appearances. But Jon's lower half should clearly be much taller than Garfield's lower half, so why do we specifically see exactly the upper half of both of them here? If I try to imagine where their legs should be, I think Garfield must be hovering.
