I feel that to a large extent this had stopped because it became less common for Randall to mention funny things in xkcd... and probably also because the xkcd forums had gone down.
Incidentally, the title is the first association I had for the original idea - but it's technically anachronistic, as the original strip is not only older than Twitch Plays Pokemon (2014), but is in fact older than Twitch (though not quite older than its parent company, which started in 2007).
